One in seven to skip Halloween costumes this year due to cost concerns

31st October 2025

New research commissioned by TopCashback has revealed that one in seven (14%) people will be celebrating this Halloween, but not dressing up to cut back on costs.

The survey highlights that among those skipping costumes this Halloween, 59% say they’re doing so to save money. Other reasons include wanting to save time (20%) and to save the environment (16%).

While over half (55%) of parents with children under 18 say their kids will dress up this Halloween, only 1 in 5 (20%) plan to buy a new costume. Parents are instead opting for cost-saving alternatives – 11% will wear a costume from a previous year, 9% will partly make their costume, 3% will hire a costume, and the same amount (3%) will borrow a costume.

Of those buying a costume for their child, over two-fifths (42%) note that this will be more than they spent last year, compared to 40% who will be spending the same amount and 12% who will be spending less.

On average, parents buying a costume expect to spend £42, with a third (33%) planning to spend  £50 or more and 17% between £21 and £30.

In order to save, over four fifths (84%) have or will use money saving techniques, such as shopping for promotions (30%), using discount codes (27%) or choosing a simple, more readily available costume  (22%). One in six (16%) plan to use cashback sites.

Adam Bullock, UK Director at TopCashback, said “When we think of Halloween, we often picture children in fancy dress trick or treating, but our research shows that many families are stepping away from that tradition to save money.

“If you’re hoping to save money this Halloween, but your children are keen to dress up, there are several alternatives to buying a brand new costume. For example, you can get crafty and look through your wardrobe for pieces that can be repurposed – a black outfit can easily become a witch, cat, or vampire with a few clever touches, such as a scarf, cape or distressed old clothing for a zombie look.

“Instead of buying expensive masks or costume accessories, turn to makeup and face paint. A little creativity with eyeliner, lipstick, and eyeshadow can create dramatic looks. There are plenty of free online tutorials to inspire you, and makeup gives you full control to personalise your look while saving money.

“As many costumes are only worn once, you can often find quality spooky looks in second-hand stores and sites like Vinted and Ebay – just be sure to shop as soon as possible before they’re snatched up.”
