Marking the start of the Debt Awareness Week, debt charity StepChange is encouraging people to take TheFirstStep towards getting debt help, by opening up the conversation around debt and removing the stigma that can surround financial problems.
Debt Awareness Week is the charity’s annual campaign to raise awareness of problem debt and remind people that free, impartial advice is available. This year’s event comes as the UK marks the anniversary of its first national lockdown, with the Coronavirus pandemic having had a devastating effect on the finances of many people across the country.
Richard Lane, Director of External Affairs at StepChange said “This Debt Awareness Week, we’re focusing on breaking down the stigma that surrounds debt, opening up the conversation and encouraging people to take #TheFirstStep towards resolving their money worries.”
“With the week also marking a year since lockdown began in England and Wales, and 2.5 million people facing a financial crisis due to the impacts of coronavirus, it’s more important than ever that households across the country know where to get help. You are not alone.”
Commenting on Debt Awareness Week Rachel Springall, Finance Expert at Moneyfacts.co.uk, said “The past 12 months have tested the financial resilience of consumers and their attitude towards how 2021 will pan out. One of the purposes of Debt Awareness Week is to persuade consumers to be more open when it comes to money and to seek help if they are worried about their financial status.”
“There are many ways for consumers to change their mindset when it comes to money, whether it be making a simple income and expenditure breakdown, switching a personal financial product or just having a conversation with a family member or friend, small steps can make a big difference. During these difficult times, it is also a wise decision for consumers who are struggling to approach a debt advice service for support before their situation gets worse, such as StepChange, the debt advice charity behind Debt Awareness Week.”
