Judgments against Irish consumers sees huge decline

2nd November 2020

The number and total value of judgments registered against Irish consumers saw a huge fall in the third quarter (Q3) of 2020 compared to the same quarter last year,  new figures released by registrar Irish Judgments show.

The number of judgments against consumers fell by 81 percent, from 678 to just 126. The total value fell by a startling 92 percent, from €57 million in Q3 2019 to €4.6 million in Q3 2020.

The average value of consumer judgments fell by nearly 56 percent, from €83,882 to €36,849 and the median value by 37 percent, from €16,290 to €10,314.

Mick McAteer as Registrar said “The latest data on judgments showing huge falls in the number and value of judgments this quarter, suggests that income support and regulatory interventions have shielded Irish households and businesses from the worst effects of the financial shocks caused by Covid19. But, the picture may be very different once the support measures are unwound.”
