Judgments against Irish consumers see major decrease in 2020

The number and total value of judgments registered against Irish consumers saw a large fall in 2020 compared to 2019, figures released by registrar Irish Judgments show.

The number of judgments against consumers fell by 62 percent, from 2,456 to just 930. The total value fell by 79 percent, from €192 million in 2019 to €39 million in 2020.

The average value of consumer judgments fell by 46 percent, from €78,066 to €42,289 and the median value by 39 percent, from €13,705 to €8,406.

Jick McAteer as Registrar said “The latest data showing huge falls in the number and value of Irish judgments in 2020, suggests that income support and regulatory interventions have shielded Irish households and businesses from the worst effects of the financial shocks caused by Covid-19. But, the picture may be very different once the support measures are unwound.”
