Latest data from UK Finance has found that outstanding balances on credit card accounts have grown by 7.6 per cent over the twelve months to July with 49.4 per cent of outstanding balances incurring interest compared to 50 per cent in July 2023.
The report also showed that there were 403 million credit card transactions in July, 8.2 per cent more than in July 2023. The total spend of £22.5 billion was 8.5 per cent higher than July 2023
There were 2.3 billion debit card transactions in July, 5.1 per cent more than in July 2023. The total spend of £68.8 billion was 0.9 per cent higher than July 2023.
There were also 2.18 billion debit and credit card transactions in the UK in July, 1.6 per cent more than in July 2023. The total spend of £74.9 billion was 1.4 per cent lower than July 2023.
Contactless payments accounted for 65 per cent of all credit card and 77 per cent of all debit card transactions. There were 1.63 billion contactless card transactions in July, 2.7 per cent more than the 1.59 billion in July 2023. The total value of contactless transactions was £25.8 billion in July, a 3.8 per cent increase on £24.8 billion in July 2023.
The number of contactless credit card transactions was 7.1 per cent higher than July 2023. The number of contactless debit card transactions was 2 per cent higher than July 2023.
