The Money Charity has announced that 250,000 young people have been taught financial education since 2010 with their money workshop
While Financial Education as a subject has officially been on the Curriculum since 2014, many schools and colleges still lack the resources and confidence to deliver this themselves. The Money Charity meets this need through its Young People Team, who provide engaging Workshops in schools, colleges and other settings throughout England, Northern Ireland and Wales.
Since 2010, The Money Charity’s Financial Education Money Workshops have been educating thousands of young people on how to manage their money well throughout their lives. This week’s 250,000 milestone means the charity have delivered to over 20,000 young people each year since 2010, or approximately 53 young people every day.
Workshops are delivered by staff and trained freelance consultants and are designed with pupils’ needs in mind. A wide range of modules and subjects are available, tailored to KS3, KS4 and Post-16 age groups, with every session interactive, engaging and fun, including plenty of discussion and practical activities for all learning types. Many students and teachers report that they appreciate the ‘external expert’ factor, especially when broaching a subject still seen as taboo by many.
The Workshops are fully independent and impartial, with no promotion of brands or products, as The Money Charity believes giving people everything they need to make the best financial decisions for themselves and their families is key. The Workshops are proven effective as, when surveyed, more than 90% of pupils state that they found sessions valuable, useful and believed they had learnt something new. A solid grounding in practical, robust Financial Education helps young people to learn and develop the knowledge, skills, attitudes and behaviours they will need to negotiate life, and especially the big decisions which will so easily shape their coming years.
Stephanie Fitzgerald, Head of Young People Programmes at The Money Charity said “We are thrilled to reach this very exciting milestone of 250,000 young people reached, a major achievement and significant day for The Money Charity’s vital work! Knowing how to manage your money well has never been more important for people’s everyday wellbeing and The Money Charity believes that ensuring young people receive high-quality, fun and engaging Financial Education is the best way to help set them up for a life of good financial decisions.”
“However, we know that there is still so much more to do and many more young people who need, and will benefit from, this input. Getting financially educated is an essential life skill for all, but a particularly important one for younger people at the ages when many first encounter having their own money, or looking towards some of the major decisions which will affect the rest of their lives.
“We believe that managing money well is possible for everyone and that finances should be seen as a positive force in our lives, helping us towards achieving our goals. This Talk Money Week, we’re calling on young people and their parents to make their schools, colleges and community groups aware of what we can offer. We’d also encourage any organisation to get in touch with us and find out more, whether it’s booking a session or getting involved in supporting our work.”
